Into the night
Desperate and broken
The sound of a fight
Father has spoken

We were the kings and queens of promise
We were the victims of ourselves
Maybe the children of a lesser God
Between Heaven and Hell
Heaven and Hell

Into your eyes
Hopeless and taken
We stole our new lives
Through blood and pain
In defense of our dreams
In defense of our dreams

We were the Kings and Queens of promise
We were the victims of ourselves
Maybe the Children of a lesser God
Between Heaven and Hell
Heaven and Hell

The age of man is over
A darkness comes and all
These lessons that we learned here
Have only just begun

We were the Kings and Queens of promise
We were the victims of ourselves
Maybe the Children of a Lesser God
Between Heaven and Hell

We are the Kings
We are the Queens
We are the Kings
We are the Queens

My own interpretation is that the song is about the fall of mankind, how we had so much promise and potential but, in the end, sabotaged ourselves and became victims of our own natures. Now we are in darkness, having suffered fighting, bloodshed, and pain, but, through faith, we steal the chance for new lives, for redemption to become the kings and queens of promise once again.

Obviously this song is about humanity having lost its connection to God and trying to regain it. The "children of a lesser god" line is not deminishing God but refering to our inabilty to hear Him (Children of a Lesser God is a play/movie about deafness). The song starts of with God (father) speaking, calling us to fight evil and to live up to our "promise." The song ends when those who have listened regain their positions as "kings and queens."

A lot of people make this song about how we, as people, have let go of our faith and are not true to God. How I see these lyrics, though, is a perfect explanation of how we broke free of the rules that religion place upon us. Our generation realised that we don't have to let go of our dreams and the things we value just because religion tells us it's wrong. The world sees us as apostases, but we feel more free than ever. They had a plan for us, but we went our own way. "We stole our new lives, through blood and pain, in defense of our dreams." We have fought for the freedom to speak our minds and live our lives the way we want to. We're not quite sure how to fill this gap, but we are no longer the future Kings and Queens of the promise of religion. We are the Kings and Queens of our own, new world.
