Distant lightning, thunder claps,
Watched our neighbor's house collapse,
Looked the other way
These potent 3 lines directly highlight the competitive and ruthless nature of survival. It harks back to the Darwinian idea of "Survival of the Fittest", as we, humanity, acknowledge the metaphorical lightning/thunder in the distance, and rather than attempt to help other species/humans, we decide to watch "our neighbours house collapse". Then, proceed to, "look the other way". This embodies the spirit that was so critical in the expansion of Homo Sapien as a species over the last 200,000 years, but also examines the interrelationships between humans, and how rivalry and competition within our species sometimes leads to the neglect of those around us ("neighbours") in the pursuit of our own benefit.
