Shadows managed to betray

This is a bit dramatic in my opinion. The sun is a strong light source. It makes shadows. Shadows are nice. Who wants to sit in the sun all day?

The walls were weak with salty tears
Through the cracks in these walls he saw the sun

The sun: hope. When the walls of the flimsy houses broke, he saw hope for something better.

We: third person collective pronoun. The protagonist and another person/a group of people had built the place he is in. The homes they built together were made of sand. Sand is not a very secure building material, and so it was weakened when the inhabitants cried. The question is, did they make the homes out of sand because they were crying or were they crying because their homes were made of sand?

Personally, this line gives a perspective of fetal consciousness. Maybe the last few lines have been describing life inside some sort of womb.

Explanation

And in this place he always knew he'd awake alone

So far the situation seems to be: surrounded by endless familiar walls, breathing underwater in the ocean, and apparently asleep, but with a constant conscious awareness of waking up alone, probably still in the same place by the looks of things.

Imagine breathing underwater in the ocean. Your breaths would be short and hard and thick with salt too. Salt can represent many things. In ancient times, auxiliary troops in the roman army were paid in salt.

His fingers trace the endless walls he knew so well

This line makes it apparent that the place he was in had walls, the walls were endless, he traced them with his fingers ('trace' suggests a detached attitude), the walls were (had become) familiar to him.
