So long boy you can take my place, got my papers I've got my pay
So pack my bags and I'll be on my way to yellow river
Put my guns down the war is won
Fill my glass high the time has come
I'm going back to the place that I love yellow river
According to an interview with Jeff Christie the writer of this song, he was very interested in early American History, particularly the Civil War. This is his interpretation of what he thought it may be for a soldier of that period returning home, not knowing what would be there. Though it came out in 1970 during the height of the Vietnam War it was never about that war, although people claimed it as an anthem of the time.
