Castle Bravo
Conducted at Bikini on March 1, 1954, this was the largest bomb ever tested by the US and by far the most notorious. A Japanese fishing boat in a supposedly safe area was covered with fallout, the crew got radiation poisoning and at least one died. Fallout also contaminated inhabited islands east of the test site, which were belatedly evacuated by the US Navy.
