I think this song is about him and his girlfriend's addiction to drugs, which he compares to heaven but really is hell, and he wants to leave her and the drugs so he can start over again, and he's begging God for a second chance. "loved ones back home" are missing him because he's not the same person he usually is, with the drugs. And he hopes they can be together again when they've got their lives on track.
