The Great Famine (an Gorta Mór) was a famine that afflicted Ireland between the years 1845 and 1852. Popularly blamed on potato blight, the famine resulted in a mass emigration of a million people and the death of a million more, causing the island's population to drop by almost 20%. Today, more than two million people of Irish descent live in Roger's home province of Ontario.

Two of the major belligerents in The Troubles, the Irish Republican Army and the Ulster Defence Association, fought respectively for a unified Irish Republic and for Northern Ireland remaining part of the United Kingdom. Largely a guerrilla war, the Troubles (Na Trioblóidí) lasted roughly from the 1960s to 1998, and divided Northern Ireland between predominantly Catholic Irish Republicans and Protestant Ulster Loyalists.
