This verse is highlighting the issues with the ways, that labourers were brought to America. They were brought as children, and told all their dreams could become true, on the other side of the ocean. The second last line, indicates that everyone turned their heads away from it, and closed their eyes to the unfairness of these children's situations.

She is talking about how slaves who are paid next to nothing, have built everything in America, and they might as well have built the oxygen that everyone else breathes. It could be interpreted as a metaphor, that everyone takes their work for granted and they couldn't really live without it. The American empire was built by low paid labourers and if they never existed, this America, would simply be a dream.

These lyrics indicate that he knows it isn't all just one kiss. He knows that when they get out of that cab and they've finished their smoke, they're going to be closer than him and her, ever were. He tries to block it out, but he can't do it, because he knows how he feels about her.
