During the "Music of the Night" scene, Erik shows Christine a mannequin of her wearing a wedding dress which was his way of proposing to her. This was his way of saying he wanted to be more than just her vocal teacher, he wanted to spend the rest of his life with her, that he really loved her. All of this was very sudden and on the first night they met face to face and it Christine wad very uncomfortable and overwhelmed by his proposal since she had never really met him in person, only in dreams. So instead of reacting in a good way like the Phantom had expected her to react to his proposal, Christine fainted in shock. Thus rejecting the what the phantom asked of her.

The phantom was Christine's vocal teacher and helped her voice strive and "made her song take wing". By doing so, Christine became an amazing singer with a captivating voice which undoubtedly would win over someones affection. Little did Erik (The Phantom) know, Christine's voice captured Raoul's, Christine's childhood sweetheart's, attention on the night of Christine's first performance and was the reason he noticed Christine again in the first place. He never forgot about his love for Christine, so by hearing her angelic singing voice and realizing that she was in fact Christine, the girl he once loved, it didn't take long for Raoul to fall in love with her again.
