This is a song about two people who have known each other for a long time, and they never really thought about each other romantically, and they have been through some rough patches in there friendship and say "don't remind me" and then she "suddenly bloomed" meaning he suddenly saw her as pretty and realizes he is interested in a romantic relationship. so they agree to leave the past in the past and leave the weeping to the willow tree. (weeping willow as in the type of tree) and as they grow in their relationship (like vegetables) he periodically asked her how she feel and their new found love and she says "who knew the other side could be so green" or saying yes she was very happy, then at the end he changed it up and asked her to marry him and again she accepts.

this is the song about a young man who goes over early in he morning to ask this girl's father if he can marry her because her father is old fashioned so he assumes by asking him for his permission it will make him happy. but the dad says no So he assumes that he is doing it just to be rude. But the boy never really cared for the father’s blessing he was going to marry her anyway, he only asked because again the dad was old fashioned, so more out of politeness than for an actual answer. If you look at it from a kid’s point of view, it’s a sad love song from with a happy ending. From the point of view of a parent or protective older sibling the man seeking to marry was more of the rude one here.
