And, there we were, all in one place - a generation
And, there we were, all in one place - a generation lost in space,
With no time left to start again.

In mid August of 1969 a concert in up state New York billed as "An Aquarian Exposition: 3 Days of Peace & Music" but better known only as “Woodstock” defined the generation and was immortalized in the lyric “And, there we were, all in one place; a generation lost in space ”. While organizers anticipated attendance to be around 200,000, that number would swell to nearly 400,000 by the 3rd day. It also marked the end of the “Peace and Love” decade “. With no time left to start again” because the turmoil of America’s involvement in Vietnam’s civil war would replace the peace and love of the 60’s with protests and violence for the first half of the 1970’s

Alternate
In July 1969, less then a month before Woodstock took place, the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) successfully put Apollo 11’s landing vehicle on the surface of the moon. The Lunar Lander contained 2 men, both men walked on the moon and once their short stay was over they safely returned to the orbiting command module and returned to earth. It is possible or better yet even likely that the lyric “And there we were, all in one place - a generation lost in space, Is referring to that “one place” as being anywhere you could find a television; since most of the mission was broadcast LIVE worldwide

Now, for ten years we've been on our own and moss grows fat on a Rolling Stone, but...

Now, for ten years we've been on our own and moss grows fat on a Rolling Stone, but... That's not how it used to be

Buddy Holly died in 1959 and so did the "sock hop"style of dance music. In the early 1960's the first wave of the British Invasion brought The Beatles, and the Rolling Stones and before the end of the decade bands like Led Zeppelin and Black Sabbath were established in the U.S. Music had evolved over the last ten years and would never again be "how it used to be" before that day February when the music died.
