This guy is trying to convince himself that he doesn't need the simple things in life such as; flowers in the spring, sunshine, cluttered leaves around the tree with kids romping through them; his protests are speaking loudly as he ends the song with a question to his love about whether or not they need each other, "or do we?" Yeah, we all need this affection, love, flowers & each other. Kids, grandkids & all. Thanksgod!
