All over Europe
The Great Northern War, which consumed almost all of the reign of Charles XII (Carolus Rex), was waged across a huge swathe of Europe. Additionally, a major cause of the Great Northern War was the contempt which many states held for the very young Charles (he was 15 when he ascended the throne). Essentially, in the beginning of his rule, his rule was questioned. After his performance in the Great Northern War, his rule was questioned by none.

While Charles XII was not necessarily known for being cruel or arbitrary in his punishments, he was an absolute monarch, and his reign in often contrasted with the Age of Liberty which followed his death. During the Age of Liberty Sweden was governed by a democratic parliament, and many new civil rights were created. This contrast makes Charles' reign look comparatively more cruel.

The reign of Charles XII (Carolus Rex) over the Swedish Empire was most marked by the Great Northern War, in which Sweden single-handedly fought and nearly beat the combined forces of Russia, Norway (ruled by Denmark), Poland, Lithuania (ruled by Poland), and Denmark. The remarkable military achievements of Charles XII made his enemies "bow to his will," until the Battle of Poltava.
