They still continue to worry, worry, worry about the possibilities of taking a risk. As soon as they get close to trying to get out there, their worry keeps them from doing so.

"Alone between the sheets" in bed, in he/she's comfort zone is where he/she resides because they refuse to take risks. And it "Only brings exasperation" because they are not satisfied, they are bored of the same old safe, easy life. "Its time to walk the streets" go out and do something and "smell the desperation" realize he/she is craving more in life.

"Day after day it reappears" each day knew opportunities arise, but "night after night" just before he/she goes for it her "heartbeat shows the fear" and he/she starts to worry too much and "ghosts appear and fade away" the opportunities go away as quickly as they arrived, missed because of he/she's reluctance to take a chance.

"Especially at night" Night is the waiting for day, the chance for whatever the person wants. And while waiting for his or her chance he/she daddles and worries about things he/she knows will be fine because even though there is nothing to worry about, that he/she knows that his/her fears are "just imagination," he/she still hesitates to take that final step.
