blue
Everything is blue

You were red and you liked me because I was blue
You touched me and suddenly I was a lilac sky
And you decided purple
"You were red and you liked me because I was blue" just means that the guy was blue and he was interested in the girl because she was red, she was different. "You touched me and suddenly I was a lilac sky, and you decided purple just wasn't for you" is saying that once they were together the girl became a different person and the guy did not like the person she had become.

And all the people say
"You can't wake up, this is not a dream
You're part of a machine, you are not a human being
With your face all made up, living on a screen
Low on self esteem, so you run on
These lyrics are basically saying that the world ("all the people") is pushing people, especially females, to adapt to what society wants them to be. "You're part of a machine, you are not a human being" - you must cooperate with society's expectations, you do not have the right to act like a real person. "Low on self esteem, so you run on gasoline" - girls these days lack confidence to be themselves so they just act the way society expects them to.

Don't be afraid, Cecilia, I'm the satellite
And you are the sky
"I'm the satellite" means he has seen the world and he is going to tell Cecilia (his daughter) all about what he has learned from the world. "And you are the sky" means that Cecilia is the most important part of his existence as a satellite, without her as the sky he would have no purpose.

I locked myself in a hotel room
I waited all night for the walls to move
I loved some girls that I barely knew
I've made some friends and I've lost some too

Crashed my car; I was seventeen
My mother in the seat right next to me
The things I've loved for the broken mirror
How a face can change when a heart knows fear
These lyrics are describing the life and experiences the writer has had before being introduced to person the song is about who is his daughter (he said so in an interview).

This song is essentially about an average man (Johnny boy) who is going through his life and everyone around him thinks he is normal and fine but in reality he is struggling with thoughts of depression and suicide. The lyric "no one really knows his mind and no one knows behind his eyes" is basically saying that nobody knows how "Johnny boy" feels. This song is telling that man to keep hope and get through his life because he is needed in this world and he is important which can be seen in the lyric "you're my pride and joy, get up johnny boy, because we all need you now". This song is telling people struggling with suicidal thoughts to keep going and not give up.

Meaning
I think this song is essentially about how we need things like music to help distract us from our own thoughts. When we do not have things to distract ourselves and we are forced to sit in silence we tend to get in our own heads. Our own thoughts consume us and sometimes that can be a terrible and torturous thing.

Someone said to you goodbye
They deflect the disrespect when they say that they blame it on the times

They all know you're qualified but they lie when they blame it on the times.
And we blame it on
This stanza is describing the world around the man (Johnny boy) and how they react to people with depression and suicidal thoughts. "They blame it on the time" is basically saying people do not know how the man is feeling and they think he is just sad because he may be going through a tough "time".
