Meaning
I've always been confused by the line "Is it I, Lord?" My gut feeling tells me that it should be "Is it ME, Lord?" After quoting God saying "whom shall I send?" (note the pronoun for a person as the direct object of the sentence) we respond with "Is it I?" using the pronoun for the subject of the verb (to send). Unless I misunderstand the meaning of this section of the song we should say ME not I. I'm quite prepared for someone to correct me, and explain why using the nominative case (subject of the verb) is wrong and using the accusative case is correct.
