The title "Ex Nihilo" literally means "From Nothing", alludes partly to the creation account, but refers mainly to the rise of God's followers in the book of Revelations, specifically from Chapter 20 onward. "Arise from death", like lyrics in many of the "Apocalyptic" songs on Terminate Damnation, refers to the rise of all Christians who died in the past for following Jesus, as written in Revelation 20:4 "A new creation" refers to the new Heaven and Earth God creates in Revelation 21:1, after Satan, the Beast, the False Prophet, Death and even Hell itself are cast into the Lake of Fire.

Meaning
We live a life in which we shelter ourselves in apathy. We ignore those for whom we should be standing up, because it's easier, or because we are afraid of the consequences of helping someone in need: "Many of us have turned off the light outside, erasing what exists beyond our front door." The artist feels more closely connected to the anger of his enemies than to the deliberate disinterest in the needs of the weak: "And for you I find it harder to reach common ground than my most glaring opposition. But what about those who've lost the luxury of choice?" This is a call to action, a challenge to those who ignore the plight of others to extend their own comfort, to stand up for those who can't stand for themselves, to make a difference to those who have no strength to change their own circumstances, and to reject the world as it is instead of simply accepting that other people suffer: "I need to know that feelings of discontent are stronger Than indifference for those too weak to stand... How much grievance will it take to awaken us from the comfort of our homes? ... The comfort of our oversized graves."

"
Drain me of my very essence
To form again what lasts
A reference to the belief that all humans are, by nature, evil since the Fall of Man in Eden. Removing that evil, which is our "very essence", would grant the everlasting life that was taken from Adam and Eve when they ate the fruit of the Knowledge of Good and Evil.

Each day I am born again to be

The Kingdom of the Heavens
Is buried treasure
Would you sell yourself
To buy the one you've found

On her wedding day
