Pour a little salt we were never here
Salt has healing properties, when put on open wound they help the process along. Probably metaphorically speaking, he wants this doomed relationship to heal, to even "Just last the year."

Staying in my play pretend
Where the fun, aint got no end
Ooh
Can't go home alone again
Need someone to numb the pain
Ooh
The “play pretend” is the world she inhabits while high. By characterizing her high(s) in a child-like manner (“play[ing] pretend”, the “playgrounds” mentioned in verse 2, and endless “fun” are stereotypical juvenile desires), the narrator subliminally conveys a realization of the immaturity of her actions.
When she says Can't go home again shes saying she can't go home, although she is having fun, she still misses the guy she is talking about in the song and someone needs to numb her pain.

Spend my days locked in a haze
Trying to forget you babe
I fall back down
Gotta stay high all my life
To forget I'm missing you
Ever since someone left her shes been trying to fill the gap with drugs, and alcohol and a fast moving life. Just so she can forget the person, but she can’t and instead remembers him.

“Fall back down” contrasts with “stay high. It plays off the drug-related use of "high” by evoking an image of her falling from flying. When the drugs wear off, she remembers him, and feels worse.

want
So much it's hurting
You're all I want
So much it's hurting
This is what the song is about. About wanting someone so much it hurts. About missing someone. About not being able to be with someone, either literally when your away from them, may be you are separated from them, but may be also because you can't be with them publicly. The lyrics are about fighting for a love that he (Harry) can't have. Now some might say it is about girls he has been linked with but it seems so much more. The plea at the end, in the last verse, just makes it seem like he is talking about a current established relationship.

night to keep her warm in time

The story of my life I give her hope
I spend her love until she's broke inside
The story of my life (the story of, the story of)

And I been waiting for this time to come around
But baby running
Love is the biggest of sacrifices, and the narrator sacrifices himself for her. He'll drive all night and catch a chill as long as she is safe and warm. It’s as though he is resigned to the destiny of love — it's the story of his life that he’ll be doing this for anyone that he loves, be it past, present or future. But in this moment, time stops.

I can't change
Leave my heart open but it stays right here in its cage

I know that in the morning now
I see us in the light upon a hill
Although I am broken, my heart is untamed still

And I'll be gone gone tonight
The fire beneath
Despite the agony, there's still hope. The heart may remain in its cage, for now, but like a bird in a cage, it will sing again and allow itself to roam and find love. As for being broken but untamed, that's a major step forward. The heart may ache and be broke, but it is not beyond repair. It (and he) will love again.

There's no net and no limit once he leaps away from this relationship, even though it’s not by choice. He also recognizes it’s his fault, since he was clinging, leaving little room for anything else.

His heart is there, waiting for her to occupy it, but she doesn't. She instead reveals that she's checked out of the relationship, emotionally speaking. When someone says they can feel something in their bones, that’s pretty, well concrete and as deep as marrow. His response is that her reveal has socked him. In the gut.
