Meaning
This song was inspired by a Novel written by Anthony Trollope: it talks about a girl which accused her beloved man to be still in love with a friend of his childhood, not specified if male or female: if you look for the video-clip, where , the Pet Shop Boys adopted a bizarre costume involving red coveralls and extremely tall pointy hats to underline a chidish atmosphere or the existence of a dream, you can understand Pet Shop Boys meant to be a male lover! Those themes were forbidden in Victorian era, so the writer tried to be not so direct. For me is a question: can I forgive my partner, if she wants me to, or aren't looking for revenge because she left me because she were not ready to be a woman?
