Stevie Ray Vaughn wrote this song after Charley Wirz unexpectedly passed on. Wirz was his very close friend and, along with his worker Rene Martinez, were the who serviced his guitars, as Vaughan was not one to be easy on them so they needed serviced quite often. Wirz, who owned Charley's Guitar Shop out of Ft. Worth, TX, built "Charley" the "faux" white Stratocaster guitar and fitted it with three Danolectric lipstick tube pickups and an engraved neck plate that read, "To Stevie Ray Vaughan, more in '84", and is the guitar mostly used by Vaughan when he played "Life Without You" (www.wikipedia.com)

It's about not taking love and life for granted, about missing the love of someone who once loved and respected you (be it walking away or death), It"s about looking at your reflection and loving the one looking back at you, and forgivining that person, Its about being present and in the moment, realizing that this is it, you don't get to come back and do it again. Trying to live a life without (much) regret. Its about acknowledeging that person you encounter on the streets with a simple hello or a smile, realizing that one day it could be you or someone you love. It's about love, Its' about life.

He wrote this song for his long time on and off girlfriend, Dee Oakley when they finally parted ways. Although they were like 'and candle a hot lava' Oakley had a small child and would not expose him to rock and roll lifestyle. They met in Nashville in 1982 and were introduced by mutual friends.

This song is about self love. He has to love himself before he can love others. He took the love of people close to him for granted but he still has their love. Long look in th mirror speaks of his recovery fron his drug addiction and his road back to the life he was given by god. The angles have waited, now take your place. It's time for him to live and love again.

I've Ben A SRV fan all the way from the beginning. And I CAME ACROSS THE LIVE VERSION.Years ago i had taped it off the radio.And i listen to it over And over. Now that version is widely available it he says exactly what he means.I think its all about getting your life together and being there for the ones who need you and love you!I have lived a life of alcohol & drugs just like Stevie did and that not always the right way to live. I Know he was sober and living a good life and trying to make amends.And pass along what he believed in .also someone he loved dearly had passed and he regretted the wasted time.that wasn't based on loving that person back.as i have just lost my wife who was my everything.and i spent so much time wasting the magical life
We we shared .So i have been streaming this live version for months at least once a night.being that i cant sleep or function.so as stevie would want me to say .iT'S TIME TO COME HOME EVERY ONCE IN A WHILE AND TAKE CARE OF THE ONES WHO NEED YOU AND LOVE YOU THE MOST! I KNOW I DO' PS.i find a new version all the time

I always loved stevies style of playing, an vowing one day id learn a tune or two from one of the maestro greats of his era. Well I've still got a long way to get there but for now ill just keep runnin my fingers up an down that fret board an always be inspired by one of my greatest inspirational guiterists of his era an mine, rest peacefully mr stevie ray Vaughn.

Why do the really great ones die so young? It's ironic that this song could now be sung about stevie ray vaughn himself. He tried so hard to give so much of hisself in the music he will now be remembered for, forever. Any of the people that took the time to post in here could be correct, but to me, it talks about life going on now without stevie ray vaughn. The angels now have their way and I believe he has taken his place with them. I am so thankful that he accepted christ as his savior prior to his untimely death, according to what I have read, and I hope to hear him sing again someday, god willing. What a true talent!.
