Paramore – Brick By Boring Brick lyrics
She lives in a fairy tale
Somewhere too far for us to find
Forgotten the taste and smell
Of a world that she's left behind

It's all about the exposure, the lens, I told her
The angles are all wrong now
She's ripping wings off of butterflies

Keep your feet on the ground
When your head's in the clouds

Well go get your shovel
And we'll dig a deep hole
To bury the castle, bury the castle
Go get your shovel
And we'll dig a deep hole
To bury the castle, bury the castle

Ba-da ba ba-da ba ba-da

So one day, he found her crying
Coiled up on the dirty ground
Her prince finally came to save her
And the rest she can figure out
But it was a trick
And the clock struck twelve
Well make sure
To build your home brick by boring brick
Or the wolf's gonna blow it down

Keep your feet on the ground
When your head's in the clouds

Well go get your shovel
And we'll dig a deep hole
To bury the castle, bury the castle

Go get your shovel
And we'll dig a deep hole
We'll bury the castle, bury the castle, whoa, whoa

Well you built up a world of magic
Because your real life is tragic
Yeah you built up a world of magic

If it's not real
You can't hold it in your hand
You can't feel it with your heart
And I won't believe it
But if it's true
You can see it with your eyes
Oh, even in the dark

And that's where I want to be, yeah

Go get your shovel (You'll be better off without me)
And we'll dig a deep hole
To bury the castle (ooh), bury the castle
Go get your shovel (You'll be better off without me)
And we'll dig a deep hole
To bury the castle (ooh), bury the castle

Ba-da ba ba-da ba ba-da
Ba-da ba ba ba-da ba ba
Ba-da ba ba-da ba ba-da
Ba-da ba ba ba-da ba ba
Ba-da ba ba-da ba ba-da
Ba-da ba ba ba-da ba ba
Ba-da ba ba-da ba ba-da
Ba-da ba ba ba ba ba ba ba

I love this song! It means how this girl is so far from reality and lives in her own bubble where nothing bad happens. But later in the end, everything comes crashing down on her and she wakes up to find how hard and tough you gotta be to be able to live in this world. So instead of living in castles, you have to live in houses built by brick by boring brick or else someone sooner or later is going to stomp all over you.

If we look at the music video, I think its about how we build up these wonderful dreams to shield us from the harsh realities. The little girl represents hayley's dream self going off to her wonderland and after a while, her world is shattered by the evils of the real world. When she escapes wonderland, she falls into the hole where the real hayley is "burying the castle;" living in reality. She throws the doll in the hole to symbolize she doesn't need dreams anymore, because reality and truth is enough.
What do you think? Btw, didn't she look so pretty? (:

I personaly went through what this song it talking about. It's my fave song and I can really understand it.
It's about how someone doesn't want to face the dangers of reality and rather live in their own head to escape it. Like I was always hiding by playing another story in my head and making myself belive it. Doing this made me almost fail school and was really vague and no one could ever get me to do anything properly.
So what Hayley is saying. Well she's helping the person to realize that real life is better becuase it is real! I love it how she says after the you can see with your eyes and "that's where I want to be", it shows that maybe she was in that position to once and she is encouraging us to follow her example.
But at the same time she lightens it up by focusing on some beloved fairy tales. I love Paramore and this sond is the best.
Come to think of it riot and this cd brand new eyes have two more similar songs, when it rains and also feeling sorry. The meanings are very familiar. But I'm thinking that when it rains is more about suicide. I wasn't close suicide I assure you.

@Paramorechick, I had to create an account just for you. It most definitely is "angles", since the previous line is talking about the exposure and lens of a camera. Angels, as in the heavenly beings with wings, would not logically fit into the song here, and would only confuse the listeners. A true photographer worries about the angles of his or her photograph, and because of the meaning behind the song, our proverbial "photographer" has the angles all wrong. Savvy?

I think "to build your house brick by boring brick" means something like accepting reality, like, you need to build your house (or life) with real things and not with dreams or whatever. And that's surely "boring" but you need to stick to it, or else "the wolf's gonna blowing it down", meaning that it won't last. Basically, I think she's telling herself to wake up, bury her fairytale world and come back to reality.

When I first heard this song I was so attracted to the Ba-da ba-da ba da bit. But I love it so much now.
It's one of them songs that picks you up when things don't go right because you need to do things in like "brick by boring brick" and we all build up a world of magic because our real life is tragic.
    It's so true!
I love Paramore. They right such meaningful songs.

I love this song. Paramore's songs all have great meanings to them. It's a great video Very savvy is it alright if I borrow the word Mandapanda22 and Studley if not sorry. I've heard their songs before but this is the first one I've actually listened to the lyrics. I wish I could sing like Hayley one day. She looks so pretty in the video. Everyone should follow the advise of the song.

My meaning to this song is even thoe your life is not great don't live in a farie tale in your mined. Live the life that god gives you and be thinkful for it. So lets go bury your farie tail deep and forget about it. Also don't depend on a person or think a prince is going to come save you every time that you call for him. Be indapendent. Don't get your head in the clouds keep your feet on the ground.

I know that she said it's about getting rid of your childhood, or something weird like that, but I always thought that it was about drugs.
This girl couldn't handle the tragedies in her life, so she ran to drugs. (you built up a world of magic, because your real life was tragic).
The woman on the outside the whole time is warning her, "be sure to keep a firm grasp on reality while you're messing with this stuff, or you're going to get hurt". (keep your feet on the ground while your head's in the clouds)(. Brick by boring brick, or the wolf's gonna blow it down).
Then the girl gets hurt, and the woman starts trying to convince the girl. "Go get your shovel! Go get everything you have, and we'll get rid of these drugs that you run to, cuz they're wrecking your life!"(chorus).
Eventually the woman says "Well, I can't draw you out of the magic world that only you reside in. I choose to believe in the things I can see".
That was my interpretation. What do you think? I love this song!

"Go get your shovel (You'll be better off without me)

This is where you go through a piece by piece dismantling of your guilty world. It's like hell on earth, there's no other way I can think of to describe it. The brick by boring brick is the rebuilding. The rest of the song I find less difficult to understand. I think it is about a woman who is struggling to accept her sinful nature. She is probably quite creative and needs to understand that this creativity is a blessing and not a curse. She needs to realise that she is allowed to use this creativity in the brick by brick rebuilding process without shame, and in that way the path will seem less boring and become more pleasurable for her (In my opinion).

At first I thought that she was one of those girls whose into fairy tales and that one day she had a dream that she was in a fairy tale and if she doesn't get out quick enough she is going to be part of the fairy tale herself. Maybe I'm not right but that's just the explanation I thought about.

I think it's about someone whose gotten so popular and who's full of herself (forgotten the taste and smell of a world that she's left behind/it's all about the exposure, the lens, I told her/keep your feet on the ground, when your head's in the clouds) and how hard it is to "bury" his/her ego that was big as a castle using just a shovel.
The second stanza's telling that no matter how pretty she is in the tv "when clock strikes twelve," she's nothing but a pig "who must make sure to put her home brick by boring brick or the wolf's gonna blow it down" (3 little pigs remember?)

It is living in the fantasy and dreams that cannot be true. Escaping the reality which is hard to accept and then on the later days when its too late we'll realize everything is no good. And we regret. The lyrics suggest to abandon the fantasies and buried it up. All we need to have is to live what the real you to know that its worth living if it is real. (-

I think it's telling us to accept reality because the sooner you accept it, the easier your life will be. They're talking about a girl who built her own perfect world to get away from the tragedy around her in her real world, but then reality came back to hit her harder later. Especially when it says, "build your house brick by boring brick or the wolf's gonna blow it down", it's telling is to build our life with reality and truth, and it will be sturdy, even though it's boring.

    This is what I think part of the song means, whether hayley talks of herself or someone else;
"when i lived on earth, my life was tragic and tragic only. Only until i escaped into my mind, where i'd created a fantasy world, did tragic transform into magic. I secluded myself from the world i left behind; and slowly forgot what earth was like. Slowly, i forgot that earth existed at all. My head was in the clouds, although i didnt have my feet on the ground: i didnt have any sense of reality. Without me knowing, the people living in the other world i once knew were trying to dig me out of the "hole" I was in. They tried to bring me back from the brink if insanity. But in my mind, they were trying to dig a hole to bury my castle.

This song is sooo great! I love it and I turn up the radio everytime its on until its at the point where my mom says, its too loud, and I say, mom, I don't give a crap because this is the song everyone should be listening to right now, so I might as well crank it up so everyone can hear it if they're not listening to it now.

I'm blown away. This is one of my favorite songs and I've always liked paramore's lyrics, they make sense, they're strong, they represent great meanings, like this one.
    Aaand yeah, hayley looks cool with the blonde hair, in the vid. (;
And wherever I go, I have this song stuck in my head, basically nearly always humming the tune, people even stare at me. But I totally don't mind 'cause it's my favoriteee song: D
    Paramore. Is. Awesome. .

"I believe it's important to stay young at heart. To have faith in what might seem impossible and to have goals beyond your current ambitions or temporary means. However, there is a huge difference, to me anyways, between acknowledging your dreams and never living in reality. Some people are so scared of being boring- so insecure with who they might be- that they build up this huge lie, it's all one big distraction. For not only the on-lookers but for their self. To me, it is a selfish way to live. A great means of defense. But selfish nonetheless. I've been hurt by this lifestyle. Hurt by people I barely know. I've even been guilty of living this way. It's so common. I'm glad that I've found some words to finally speak up about it.
A brick is such a traditional, tired and plain boring representation of solidity. I wanted the whole song to have this sort of fairy tale vibe… only to twist the point I'm trying to make in the song which is, 'Stop living in a fake fairytale… like, wake up! ' When thinking how I could really get that across in the song I decided I'd use a house. Someone's safe place, even in a fairy tale… you can't forge a refuge out of magic & fairy dust. You gotta build it just as real and as solid as a stupid old brick. "

She was abused, when she was young, and helpless to protect herself, too young to know what was happening, her real world destroyed, shattered, skewed, she hid in a make believe world, where she would be safe. She no longer knows how to relate to people in a real way, in the real world, but until she works through the pain and comes back to the real world, she'll be lonely forever, in the world that she created, and even her prince can't save her. : '(
