Muse – Dead Inside lyrics

Revere a million prayers
And draw me into your holiness
But there's nothing there
Light only shines from those who share
Unleash a million drones
And confine me then erase me babe
Do you have no soul?
It's like I died long ago
Your lips feel warm to the touch
You can bring me back to life
On the outside you're ablaze and alive
But you're dead inside

You're free to touch the sky
Whilst I am crushed and pulverised
Because you need control
Now I'm the one who's letting go
You like to give an inch
Whilst I am giving infinty
But now I've got nothing left
You have no cares and I'm bereft
Your skin feels warm to caress
I see magic in your eyes
On the outside you're ablaze and alive
But you're dead inside

Feel me now
Hold me please
I need you to see who I am
Open up to me
Stop hiding from me
It's hurting me
Only you can stop the pain
Don't leave me out in the cold
Don't leave me out to die
I gave you everything
I can't give you any more
Now I've become just like you
My lips feel warm to the touch
But my words seem so alive
My skin warm to caress
I'll control and hypnotize
You've taught me to lie without a trace
And to kill with no remorse
On the outside I'm the greatest guy
Now I'm dead inside

It's about giving in a relationship. There comes a point when one individual in the relationship feels like they are giving more than they are receiving. They feel as if they love the other more so. Everyone loves differently yes, but it's the amount of effort that you put into the relationship. In context of this song, the protagonist feels like he is doing and giving too much and has lost purpose. They give so much that they in turn forget to give back to themselves, to love yourself essentially. Caught in the mix of things, because of the lack of trust and effort of the other partner, they too become like them. Cold, stolid, and dead inside.

I think it's linked to "Psycho" in some way. The guy in "Psycho" is trained to become a psycho killer and that's kind of what's going on here right? He's been turned into someone else, reset like this other person who seems so real but is really completely different on the inside and he can lie now and kill now without any thought because he's dead inside and it won't make a difference. He's been turned into the psycho from psycho and has realised he's been brainwashed into it and isn't really alive as himself anymore. He seems so alive but he isn't. It's all an act. That's what I'm thinking anyway. You guys?
Awesome song :) Both of them.
