This poor sap lost his love to either the bottle or he ignored her or she just wanted to move on. We can only guess. She writes which means they stay in touch which he thinks is a clue to her coming back to him even though he spends his days alone believing she is there beside him just like the old days. Asking mrs. Rita for advice is a disperate last chance to find out if his love is coming back but asking why lovers come and go tells us he does not believe she is coming back. In the end he hopes but is still alone. This has always been my favorite gin blossoms song. Reminds me of when my girlfriend dumped me. Took a long time to move on while she moved on quickly. Why do lovers come and go? We may never know.
