I personally think the song is about 2 people in some sort of relationship but 1 of them likes the other person a lot less, & the relationship doesn't last. I think maybe the person who was less in love really wanted to love whoever is singing and they really tried their best which I think is expressed with "So why'd you fill my sorrow / with the words you've borrowed" - the less-in-love person only acted how they thought someone in love was supposed to act, but it was never something that came to them. Maybe the less-in-love person realised that they could never love the other in the way that they wanted so they ended the relationship, and the singer wonders "and why'd you sing hallelujah /if it means nothing to ya/ why'd you sing with me at all?" The singer wants to know why the person bothered with them at all if they never really loved them
