A Fine Frenzy – Borrowed Time lyrics
Thick as thieves the last of leaves
In the winter sun
Holding fast this freezing branch
Is home to us

Step, step right over the line
And onto borrowed time
When it's life, not waiting to die
Waiting to divide to divide

Counting stars and passing cars
On the interstate
The end is near I feel it dear,
But I am not afraid

Step, step right over the line
And onto borrowed time
When it's life, not waiting to die
Waiting to divide to divide

But you say you're getting tired
You're tired and so am I
When you follow from behind

Step, step right over the line
And onto borrowed time
When it's life, not waiting to die
Waiting to divide to divide

But you say you're getting tired
You're tired and so am I
When you follow from behind

The narrator is going through a rough or pretty stationary time and doesn't want to leave the "branch" or spot they are in life because it is "home to [them]". Basically, the narrator is afraid of change, of starting over and starting something new.
"step, step right over the line.
    And onto borrowed time.
When it's life, not waiting to die.
    Waiting to divide, to divide".
-this next verse is about confronting your fears- fears of change and the future. The narrator is saying life shouldn't be wasted--in life you should take risks instead of just waiting to die. Instead of waiting for death, divide by continuing to step over one line and another and another and so on. Divide and devote your time to things that are important to you rather than wasting your life away.
Another possible analogy for this verse:.
Is a very musical one (which I find quite interesting). (if you read music you may have picked up on it).
"step right over the line (or measure) and into "borrowed time" I. E. A triplet in simple time or duplet in compound time.
"not waiting to die" I. E. Not ready to end the song just yet.
Instead, the composer is just going to keep on dividing the time they have left, which is exactly what occurs in "borrowed time".
The end of the song is saying, "you're tired and so am i" or you're ready to give up on life or the opportunities it has to offer, but you have to keep pushing forward until you reach the goals you want to reach.
