I have only ever heard this song without the () lyrics. Here is what I believe it all means. I believe that this man was deeply hurt by his lover, who left him. He is asking her to do that which is impossible, and if she does so, she will again be his true love. Basically, he still loves her, but is bitter. The parentheses lyrics seem to indicate a different aspect of the song, which implies the man is about to go to war, and has a need for closure regarding his ex-lover. The singer is expressing the deepest love imaginable, with the deepest wound of hurt accompanying it. Ouch.

A good song for a songwriter to sing. The words written are exactly from the eyes of the traveling performer. After a while, everything looks the same, there isn't anything that hasn't already been experienced on the road somewhere, as well, songs meanings, which in the beginning of a tour had such depth, and to the audience listening still do, but to the performer, who must sing them over and over in repetition and still having to put smiles on their faces. Just doesn't feel real anymore. The longing for home is too great.

Poor fellow. He is a horrible co- dependant! This song is about a guy who is so in love with a woman that he will allow dirt to be kicked on him again and again, just for the chance to have her come back to him as her old stand by. The hilarious notion that she is cheating on him, almost within his presence, yet again, he waits for her to return to him and is overjoyed when she does.

This song is so simply and beautifully expressed. This is about a five month relationship, one that started so sweetly, but later all of the infatuation has died out, and reality sets in. For anyone, in any relationship, this is so. Infatuation is a powerful thing, but once it dies you are left with just the you's and me's of any relationship. The way weather and seasons are used to express the moods and the literal time periods within the relationship are remarkably written.

This song is done in simple sweetness. A young couple, seeking out life on merely a dream and pocket money. They are Americans, yet this song I believe is a song about the immigration of the heart. Being in a country, where all freedom is around you, a place where many from other people from other countries dream of coming to. This couple decides to go find America within America. The irony is, just as an immigrant from a distant country thinks he longs for a different country to live in, he finds that when he arrives, his happiness is moot. He longs for home, is empty and aching. So is as well, for persons within their own land, when you leave what you know as home, even while seeking out places in your own homeland, the homesickness follows.

The song lyrics are incomplete. The final meaning if you hear the full song, the end of the song says this "Time it was and what a time it was, it was a time of innocence, a time of confidences. Long ago, it must be, I have photograph, preserve your memories, they're all thats left you." It is profound. Telling about two friends who have shared a lifetime together, and after death, only a photograph to remind one another of their friendship.

This song to me has always seemed to indicated an abduction of a child, a girl. I think the song is written from a man's point of view, a man who has seen in a vision what has happened, and is trying to explain this to the police, but is getting ignored. He is stating that time is a wasted go, meaning, that waiting to find the girl alive is pointless, as she is about to die if the police don't listen. He has discovered a mask, that the abductor used, but the police only care about the obvious evidence, rather than this man's vision. He goes on to say when the dogs they find her, got time to wait till tomorrow, to find it (the murder weapon). Will she smell alone, meaning, will there be other girls they will find along with her, as well, dead. The pain the man expresses is that by the time she is found, the police will have plenty of time. It will already be too late.
