Funny song from one of the Goo Goo Dolls' first albums, "Jed". This song was written years before they even became famous and was one of the first songs John Rzeznik sang on lead vocals. In this song the lead vocalist daydreams about being someone famous like James Dean, rather than just being a nobody drinking at a bar. The singer imagines how great life would be if he was famous like James Dean, but then after someone tells him that James Dean was gay, he completely changes his mind.

Explanation
"
A television war between the cynics and the saints
Flip the dial and that's whose side you're on
The "television war between the cynics and the saints" is about the media war between the Democrats and Republicans. Both parties are constantly at war with each other, which hurts the division of the country. "Flip the dial and that's whose side you're on" basically means that whichever media outlet you tune into will brainwash you and put you on the side of either the "cynics" or the "saints", depending on which media outlet you get fed into.

It's funny how this song was written 25 years ago and the words are truer today than they were when the song was written. "A television war between the cynics and the saints" describes the media war between the Democrats and the Republicans. "Flip the dial and that's whose side you're on" means whichever side of the media you feed into will brainwash you and put you on their side. With how divided America is today, especially during a major health epidemic, it's almost scary how relevant this song is today.

The lead singer of the Goo Goo Dolls (John Rzeznik) wrote this song about the neighborhood he grew up in. This is NOT about the Broadway in New York City, it's about the Broadway way up in Buffalo, New York. Rzeznik grew up in Buffalo when he lived with his parents before they both died when he was young.
