One of those songs I have appreciated very much since the first time I ever heard it (mid 80's?). Recently kind of rediscovered it and have been looking at the lyrics. It seems to be more than a beautiful love song however when you consider the parts that talk about "freedom" and "men of insight". Have not determined for myself if this is somehow just two ideas slapped together (reflection on an adored lover and a statement of hope for some an idea of freedom). Given the fact that this came out in 1970, it seems to me that it may be a civil rights song disguised as a love song. In any event it is beautiful and simple and yet open to interpretation whether it about an idea, a woman or both or possibly even neither!

Appears to be the blueprint for the first song on the "Tunnel of Love" album by Bruce Springsteen lyrically. Have never heard this song before so I do not know how similar/not similar the tune. To me it is interesting to not that the Springsteen song, to me, sounds like it could have been covered by Elvis Presley and also that Elvis covered some of Mr. Reeds songs.
