This is a direct quote from an interview with J. Robert Oppenheimer, one of the men who developed the atomic bomb. In the interview he spoke those words about what he felt on seeing the first artificial nuclear explosion near Alamogordo in 1945. I have heard the recording of his interview, which took place in 1965, and even then, twenty years later, he still seemed shaken and awed. I have lived in the shadow of nuclear war from the day I was born. I understand to the depths of my soul just what Oppenheimer meant by that quote. The power of a nuclear bomb is devastating and awesome, and although I understand why it seems necessary to hold that power, we still must remember the truth that with great power comes great responsibility. Although I am not much for prayer, I hold hope in my heart that we will never need that power, but if we do, then I pray that those who use it will wield it with honor, restraint, and mercy.
