What is the color,
When black is burned
I listened to this song many times since my hazy hippy days in the early '70s. I always thought there was a deeper message in these lines; listen to how melancholically and sadly he sings them. I think that he is referring to racial prejudice, and the sort of painful questions that the innocence of childhood asks that face any parent, and therefore the difficulty of bringing up your child to be amazed and full of wonder of a beautiful world, but have to explain the ugly side of human nature too.
Probably a crazy thought, but that's what it always meant to me!
