I read once that someone thought this song was about the assassination of Martin Luther King Jr., but since it was released in 1966 on the album Blonde On Blonde it couldn't possibly be about that.
I see a lot of drug references both literal and literary. Metaphors loom large in all of Dylan's lyrics and I think some of the meanings will always remain illusive and ambivalent. |

This is brilliant old school song writing... so literal yet fantastically metaphorical at the same time.
