This is about how when someone is in an abusive relationship, they keep coming back to the abusive boyfriend/girlfriend even though they keep getting abused, and they're not willing to admit that the person is abusive ("face down in the dirt, she said this doesn't hurt") because they love the person. And this is from the point of view of someone who knows the girl pretty well and he's lecturing ("heed my lecture") the abusive boyfriend.

Oh I figured it out. This is about how the magic has gone out of his relationship "Your heart has a lack of color" so he and his girlfriend or wife or whatever she is to him have gone on a plane ride "your nerves gather with the altitude" to a vacation place at the beach "and what a lovely seaside holiday, away" and their relationship gets the spark back.

My favorite part is when he says "You didn't get to heaven but you oh oh oh oh" I love how the song starts out all mellow, then halfway through it gets faster and that just makes this song so awesome. Also they might be making a monty python reference, beause the song is called 42, and I'm pretty sure that whole "the meaning of life is 42" joke came from monty python, and the fact that coldplay and monty python are both british makes it a bit more likely that they would have done something like that than if they weren't both british. Anyway it makes me think of that because this song is about life and death and almost getting to heaven and ghosts. Not to say that this song is funny though.

The video for this is amazing, I love the way they write in the air with a glowy thingy (can't think what to call it), but it looks like an ethereal ribbon of light, and it fits perfectly with the emotions this song brings out; elation and joy. This is also possibly inspired by Paul's (Paul from the Bible) letters to all the churches about keeping the faith until the end, even if they're smothered with oppression.

This song sounds like it's about how he is in love with this girl, and if she doesn't love him, he's going to go be in the military or something; "i dont want to be a soldier" "so if you love me why'd you let me go?" he just wants to know if she loves him. Plus it's winter, which sort of changes the way you feel when you hear the song, knowing that whats happening is going on in the winter.

"The road outside my house is paved with good intentions" is a reference to the road to heaven "the road to heaven is paved with good intentions", I think that's a bible verse in proverbs or something. "hired a construction crew" means that he can't get to heaven on his own, because "its hell on the engine" which means if he were all on his own, he'd go to hell, as the engine is metaphoric for himself. That's the only part of this song that seems to make sense to me, but its still a really awesome song.
