Far away, I can hear your prayer
And I know it means goodbye
Far away, nothing I can say
On the last day of my life
Far away, I can hear your prayer, and I know it means goodbye. This is showing that he knows people are waiting for him back home, that he, perhaps even, has a family awaiting his return. They're praying for it safely on the surface, but deep down they know that war is cruel, and he is like to die.
Far away, nothing I can say, on the last day of my life. He comprehends the situation he is in, and is speechless of it. He has been sent to war, and knows little to nothing of it other than the fact that people die during war. He is accepting his fate, albeit hesitantly as he is but a pawn to the generals that are, more or less, ordering him to die.

Awoke to the sound of the dripping of water
The wailing of shells far away
I sat up and listened, I rose and got ready
To greet the last day of my life
These lines are referencing to the preparation before battle. [The Singer] is hearing his comrades getting shelled from the battlefield, likely from artillery. He sat up, and listened; Likely to the wailing of death, and destruction going around him, at least on the surface. He rose, and got ready to greet the last day of his life: He knows he is dying, likely a conscript in the military. This theme, on the surface, seems to show imagery from World War 1, or the Great War. The fact that it's of war is prevalent throughout the piece, referencing the shelling, and trenches. Even with the drum beats at the very beginning in the instrumental, it seems to have that vibe from the get-go.
