I believe this is the song of a woman suffering from depression because of lost loved one. She says, "I don't like walking around this old and empty house", which may mean that she is lonely and the house they once shared seems empty and old without him there. Next the man says, "So hold my hand I'll walk with you my dear", which may mean that she is hallucinating that he is there to comfort her. Next she says, "The stairs creak as you sleep, its keeping me awake" and the man says, "It is the house telling you to close your eyes". This makes me think that maybe the woman is becoming suicidal and the man is trying to lure her to her death (to him). What better line is there to support this than the next? "And somedays I can't even trust myself/its killing me to see you this way". She cannot trust herself to stay alive, And the man wants her to end her life so that she can be happy. "There's an old voice in my head that's holding me back" may refer to her conscience telling her that she can still be happy if she lives. The man says, "well tell her I miss our little talks", which might mean that her conscience us her when her lover was still alive, which would explain how the lover said he misses their little talks. "Soon it will be over and buried with our past/We used to play outside when we were young and full of life and full of love", is the man saying, 'when you die the pain will be over and we will be together' and the woman is saying that things have changed since you died and we grew up.

The screams all sound the same
The wife is telling her husband that the screams sound the same. She also says that there are voices in her head, so maybe she is going crazy.

I believe this song has to do with a man coming out as gay. He says, "Please believe me, this isn't easy", which means it isn't easy for him to tell everyone how he feels. This song is also sung toward someone (probably a man and a first love) who left him for a woman. When he says things like, "turn on those smoke machines/ magic and mystery", it alludes to the possibility that the man who left him lied. He also says, "you like to play pretend", which supports my previous claim that the first love lied to him. Yet a third thing that prove that the 'first love' lied is when he says, "I can't beleive your lies". We can also assume that the person singing this song was very in love with the liar and truly thought their love was real, saying things like 'we were like bottle rockets', "you were my only one" and "we were a fire burnin". He also said "you are just a lesson I'm learnin", which may mean that he is getting over his first love. He also says, "Now I know I have to stop it" which may mean that he had been trying to get the love to date him again.

Tick tock, goes the clock,
Even for the doctor
I believe that this is just saying that even thought the Doctor lives longer than most people, he won't live forever and he won't be able to save everyone.

Did you ever make it out of that town
Where nothing ever happened
Again, I believe she is speaking to her past self, and asking herself if she ever got out of her boring hometown. Since obviously she did, maybe she is asking herself if she really has changed. There are many ways that this song could be interpreted. A lot of people are comparing it to lost love, considering that is usually what Adele songs are like, but I am leaning towards this option because there are so many metaphors withing this song it is hard to imagine a different hidden meaning.

There's such a difference between us
And a million miles
A lot of people have said that this isn't about an ex, and I agree. A lot of people choose to interpret songs the way they need it to be interpreted, and I agree with pretty much everything that has been said. In these few lines I think she is referring to her past self, and by 'a million miles' she is referring to time, and she is talking about how she has changed. Another thing I found interesting is that Adele is British, so why say that she is in California instead of a place in England? I believe this adds to the message that she is speaking to her past self, the one who wasn't a singer, and she is asking herself if she wants to become that person again.
