The meaning I get from this song (because I'm in a similar position) is that no matter how deep the love between this boy and a girl could get to be, she is following with her plans of going away. So that's what he is scared about, loosing her, but also they have to make the most of the little time they still have so theres no room for fears when they are together. That makes you have nightmares and share those fears with other people (your friends). And the relationship they have right now isn't all they could be because theres no point in getting complicated when they just want to make the most of the time left.
