Dogs takes human life and translates it to a dogs life. So that you can then listen and realize your life is much like a dog. You are an animal of the machine. Our actions and character is not far removed from that of a pack animal. Fight to the top and someday the top will overcome you. It's all a game, you work your way up, but don't get lazy, to be on top you have to be aware because someone is always trying to best you. You begin to believe no-one is really a friend it's all just face time. Loyalty becomes a trinket to you. You've become a cog of the machine. Your opulence takes it's toll on you and in the end you are also a victim of the machine. The guitar work in this song is insane, it makes the entire piece come alive both human and animal. It melds the to realities. David Gilmore is one of the greatest at his art.

When I leave I don't know
What I'm leaving behind
He saw the Hawk he wants to soar. He will give up what he has to get something different. He doesn't find the life he's living to be what he wants forever.

The fawn-eyed girl with sun-browned legs
Dances on the edge of his dream
And her voice rings in his ears
Like the music of the spheres
We all had (men) girls we grew up with we envisioned we would marry and live happily ever after with. Nothing is ever how the follies of youth envisioned. Yet they ring through the years.

And a bright and nameless vision
Has him longing to depart
He knows his future is not here, he has to go somewhere. He doesn't know where but he knows his future is somewhere else. (I joined the Navy). Sorry but I grew up with this music it became my soul.

I have always loved this song, at least since it came out. It means to me - going to extremes to enjoy what you perceive as excitement. Knowing what it means if caught, but just going for it. Going for that adrenaline. But also you need to be in touch with your elders. They may have information to guide you in your life. Learn it and ride the wave. Ok so Uncle had a Barchetta but he obviously taught him how to drive, how to evade. Get my meaning?

But the suburbs have no charms to soothe
The restless dreams of youth
I always see a Tom Sawyer at this point of the song. "How can you be living if you haven't ever lived?" Have you ever got out in the wild? No lights no big city. And survived! So many have NEVER gotten to do this one act of childhood innocence that makes the world so much clearer. And for this RUSH grieves. As I see it anyway.

Some will sell their dreams for small desires
Reference to people losing everything they had for screwing around? Or doing drugs? Don't sell out what you want for something small in comparison. Why didn't I understand that back in the '80s? Lesson here people.

Drawn like moths we drift into the city
The timeless old attraction
Cruising for the action
Lit up like a firefly
Just to feel the living night
Kids would drive to the city just as everyone does today for the entertainment. The movies, the cruise boulevard. That was defined in our childhood as where IT was happening. So we sought to experience it. To feel the life.

Nowhere is the dreamer or the misfit so alone
The ones that don't fit the social Norm (athlete, cheerleader) live a life of an outcast shunned by those around them. (Angie I remember you and miss you).

Growing up it all seems so one-sided
Opinions all provided
The future pre-decided
Detached and subdivided
In the mass production zone
As a matter of government rule you only get fed what they want you to know. From grade school to high school you were taught what they wanted you know. Get a job in the factory and live a happy life. "Don't bother big-brother".

Explanation
"
In between the bright lights
And the far unlit unknown
The buffer area between the big city and the rural "unlit" areas. Unlit means no street lights. Probably areas never seen by suburbanites. The place they don't go, there is nothing out there.

In geometric order
Have you ever looked at real subdivisions on Google Earth you'll see what they are saying. Every square inch accounted for. No lost space.

I feel that the writer was realizing that everybody is so busy in their everyday lives that they totally miss what affect we have on our Planet. So many sensors are in place to monitor the health of our planet but no one is paying attention. There are nut jobs and big business clouding the truth, but the truth remains "You are killing our planet" but no one pays attention. They are too busy with life. You have been warned, you have been warned, you have been warned! That is my take on the Absalom.

to be

Sadder still to watch it die
Than never to have
This is the hardcore gist of the song. "You once were great but now you are not". You had a talent but now you don't. You did great things and now you have lost them. It's easy if you never had it. Why did you leave us? You once had it but you could provide much more by staying with us.

indecision

And he stares out the kitchen door
Where the sun will rise no
The writer is out of creative juice. He doesn't want to live anymore because he isn't what he once was. He won't see the sun rise because he will be dead.

applause.

And closes her bedroom door
She can't perform as she once did, her body is wracked with pain. She shuts herself off from the outside. She admits to herself her is status is Done. She is Out of Circulation, she will never again enjoy applause.

My interpretation would be: 2 totally different individuals that had Stellar careers - One a physical Arts performer the other a Writer. They ran out of their creative or physical stamina that they had when they were younger. But instead of finding something else to do they just shut down and stopped living (closed the bedroom door, he stares out the kitchen door, Where the sun will rise no more). I believe the band was trying to convey "Okay so you can't do what you used to do, are you just going to give up?" What they want you to feel is "Life has many outlets for your energy, this is a sad story don't live your life like that".
