A walk on part in the war
For a lead role in a cage
This song was made by Gilmour and Water's about Syd Barret. Barret was the original lead vocalist and founding member of the band. At the time of Barret, only Waters was there which made him create most lyrics and Gilmour was his replacement. Syd had been replaced because all the years of pain and drugs led him to break down becoming mentally insane. He suffered of severe schizophrenia and left Floyd before that because the drugs hit him hard but still was the littlest bit conscious. He would rarely hit a stage where he would be normal for a day then get out of it again. Along with becoming incapable of most basic things; he also became a jerk and isolated making it impossible to preform in the band. The main concept of the song being written was to say how they missed there old friend Syd and wanted him to defeat his severe schizophrenia. Sadly they also knew he probably wouldn't and wrote out there sympathy for him. A line stating his insanity would be like "Did you trade your heroes for ghost" and a line saying how they missed him is "Wish you were here".
