A know-it-all thinks he knows what's going on when often times he really doesn't. In the song, the guy thought everything was great, that the relationship was strong and durable; he thought he knew everything. But in the end, he finds that that was not the case and that he and she were "just a legend in my mind." In that sense, then, he thought he knew what was going on, but he never saw the signs as in the first four lines; he had played the know-it-all fool.
