That the winds will change
At the beginning of the wars against Morgoth the Elves appeared to be in a victorious position, establishing many great kingdoms and prospering in relative peace whilst they kept Angband under siege. Ulmo however, knew that the winds would eventually change and the elves be cast down before Morgoth's might.

This is a reference to the Doom of Mandos (also known as the Doom of the Ñoldor) which was the judgement carried out by the Valar on the Elves who took part in the kinslaying at Alqualondë.

As Morgoth walked out of Angband's gates clad in his black armour he was said to have stood before Fingolfin like a tower, casting a dark shadow over the High King who gleamed like a star in contrast, clad in his silver mail and wielding his sword Ringil that glittered like ice.

After a long and grueling fight, Morgoth trapped Fingolfin's neck beneath his armoured foot and prepared to break it but not before Fingolfin had time to run his blade through Morgoth's foot, causing him to walk with a limp forever after the fateful engagement.

Be aware the storm gets closer
Ulmo was the Vala who took control of the oceans in Arda hence the name "The lord of water". He had foreseen Morgoth's power eventually storming over the elves in the future despite their most valiant efforts to defeat him.

In order to save the elves from this encroaching storm, he visited the Noldor prince Turgon in a dream and guided him to the hidden valley of Tumladen which was previously an unknown land to most beings.
