This song very poetically describes the Celtic rituals of Samhain. Samhain took place on October 31st and is the basis of our modern celebration of Halloween. It was a celebration of the end of summer, the time of Lugh (sun deity). As the days became shorter and colder the deity, Cailleach Bheur would bring the winter, and this was seen as the appropriate time to celebrate the natural cycle of life and death. Thus, All-Souls was created as a tribute to the lives and deaths of ancestors. The occasion was frought with bonfires, dancing, feasts and rituals by the elders to invite the spirits of the good to celebrate and drive away the spirits of the wicked. All-Souls is still puzzled over as a time of intense paranormal activity, and as seen in the fifth stanza, "voices on the wind" refers to those who would hear the voices of their ancestors giving hope and encouragment for the coming year. A dramatic and haunting image of a ceremony that has so unjustly been forgotten by so many.
