Explanation
"
In my memory I will always see
The town that I have loved so well
Where our school played ball by the gasyard wall
And we laughed through the smoke and the smell
The Artists begins by remembering Derry as it was in his childhood. He evokes the sights and sounds he equates with a childhood full of joy. His school played Football, near the Gasyard (a local gasworks in Derry) and that his childhood was filled with laughter, with little notice plaid to the smoke and smog from the many factories in Derry.

The use of this wording is to convey one of Derry being a poor city, that relayed on an industrial infrastructure but that despite the city being mostly impoverished the people therein were proud, free and happy.
