This is just an opinion so no one needs to agree with me but I think that this song is meant for those who feel broken and that they feel worthless. It's for those who have no self-confidence and etc. One evidence I have for thinking this is that in one of the lines, "If I went out the back door, nobody would stop me.", that would mean that the person thinks that if he OR she runs away nobody would care about them. In the chorus that is sung by Danny, I presume, that would show that the person finally started thinking a bit of positive things about themselves.

Meaning
When I finished reading these lyrics I clearly saw two meanings in it that mean to both lovers and soldiers. The first meaning of it is that it's clearly about soldiers meaning cadets AND generals going into war and some of them dying due to injuries caused by guns and some surrendering due too many people dying and suffering and going into comas. In a line it states 'Do you know what's worth fighting for? When it's not worth dying for.' This would mean that their asking them if they really think it's worth losing people and sacrificing themselves for something that really doesn't seem to be worth much. Now for the second meaning, for lovers that get heart broken this song clearly asks if dating someone is worth the heart break, for all you know and this is for the women, for all you know they could be players that would just fill their pleasurable desires and throw you away like trash. Now I don't wanna be sexist so now as for men you guys would date any girl you fall in love with but you don't know if she's a player or not. In all this song means a lot for all those who are heart broken and for our fighters out there that are still fighting to keep us all safe.

Meaning
This is just my opinion. No one has to agree with this but this song has a strong meaning that they want to put out. In one of the verses one of them states that It's not alright, can you hear me crying? Clearly he's saying that he didn't wanna kill that person but had no choice because he was doing it for survival and self-defense because of feeling threatened or something. In another line where it states he would mean that he warned the person to step away or else but they didn't listen. So in total I think that this whole songs meaning is to tell others that they were doing it as survival and self-defense and didn't want to kill but they didn't want to be the one who dies or to lose someone so important to them.

This line just means that he warned someone that wanted to get close to someone that he cared about and they might have had a weapon or something that could harm them. "I've told you once, I'm the only one who hold's her." might refer to that that person that he cared about was a woman, probably his wife, girlfriend or his sister if he/they have one.

Johnny meant that he wanted to be able to protect that one person that he cares the most about. He's getting guilt because he killed the person that tried to killed the one important person. "It's not alright, Can your hear me as i cry?"

21 guns symbolizes the 21-gun salute in which soldiers shoot 21 times into the air as a salute to the person who they care. This salute is used whenever a fellow cadet or general or someone who was important died. It was an important salute for them to do inorder to show that they cared.
