This song essentially states how little worldly possessions mean in the long run. He cares about being heard, he cares about being a success in life. And in his mind, gaining wealth and possessions is not being a success.
Sooner or later, there will be a time in your life when no amount of money or hoarded items will help you. It's times like that when your true character will come out: Do you own your life, or do your possessions own you?
