Andrew Lloyd Webber – Memory lyrics
Midnight
Not a sound from the pavement
Has the moon lost her memory?
She
is smiling alone
In the lamplight, the withered leaves collect at my feet
And the wind begins to moan

Memory
All alone in the moonlight
I can smile at the old days
I was beautiful then
I remember the
time I knew what happiness was
Let the memory
live again
Every streetlamp seems to beat a fatalistic warning
Someone mutters, and a streetlamp gutters,
And soon it will be morning.
Daylight
I must wait for the sunrise
I must think of a new life
And I mustn't give in
.
When the dawn comes, tonight will be a memory too
And a new day will
begin
Burnt out ends of smokey days
The stale cold smell of morning
The streetlamp dies, another night is over
Another day is dawning...
Touch me!
It's so easy to leave me
All alone with the memory
Of my days in the sun...
If you touch me, you'll understand what happiness is
Look, a new day
Has begun

In the musical "Cats" this was the featured song of Grizabella, the Glamour Cat, whose glamour and beauty had been stolen by age. She is initially shunned by the others, probably because of her decrepit appearance. Only after singing this song do the rest of the cats realize that there is much more to her than her tattered, grizzled coat indicates and that they've done her a great disservice by treating her as they have and they welcome her back into the clan. In fact, her story even moves Old Deuteronomy, the revered leader, to select her to be reborn into a new life, a great honor among the cats. The obvious moral being not to judge people based on their appearance, but as Dr. Martin Luther King said, "on the content of their character".

Nobody seems to notice that Victoria is always reaching out to Grizzabella because she represents Gods undying love. Because the LORD dose'int look at the appearance He looks at the heart. So, that is what is being taught between Victoria and Grizzabella and the rest of the cats realize that you need to be willing and able to forgive no matter whats been done to you. Because Christ said that if you forgive then your Father in Heaven will be forgiven but if you don't forgive then your Father in heaven will not forgive you. Because Jesus said "Father forgive them for they know not what they do." So, you cannot hold onto hate; because it will only tear you apart from the inside out. Because the one who wrote this song has known this and done this there whole damn life and that is Andrew Lloyd Weber. Because the LORD thru Jesus are the ones that ultimately made the show iconic because if you listen to the words "we are handling peaces from the Messiah" that is ultimately the teachings of Jesus. So, that is why God told my mother that this show CATS would be important to me and God thru Jesus kept me from killing my mom and dad by way of this show.

I see it as she is dying and she's not what she use to be. But she has her memories when she was beautiful and happy. But now that she has aged the world doesn't see her anymore and she's rejected for being old. And as she dies she realized that a new life awaits her where once again she will feel those days in the sun.

Grizabella is mourning over the fact that she has lost her beauty and is being rejected by all of the other Jellicle cats. The song turns their opinions of her around and she is then selected by Old Deuteronomy. She remembers her old life when times were good and reminds everyone that even when you get old and lose what you used to have, you still have the memories of those better times. In this song it is of her beautiful days when she was loved by others and not shunned as she is before she sings it. The song is a lament so shows her mournfulness but at the same time all of her passion.

This is a song that is appropriate to be sung at the funeral of a once beautiful woman, both inside and the out, who upon aging finds that no one looks inward to see her yet beautiful heart. Old and forgotten she is before she at last, quite withered and very faded, she dies alone.

This is Grizabella, the Glamour Cat lamenting over what her previous life was like before and after she left the Jellicle tribe but now she has returned she no longer seems to fit in with the other cats and is shunned my most of them she remembers that she was beautiful but now realises she is not.
