I think this song is about a girl who has had a troubled past or something and she's afraid to let her guard down because she's afraid of actually falling in love and the guy won't give up because he really cares about her and he's willing to do anything for her and prove to her that they are really meant to be.

I'm pretty sure it's about a failing relationship that the guy can't just get out of. Like the whole "I'll stand on my own two feet ... I just can't walk away" is basically saying they fight and everything but he still can't give up. And the chorus is basically just the guy asking for another chance to make everything right.
They are asking for another chance. The guy is in love with a girl who isn't letting him into her world. he wants to be with her and will do anything for her. This is an amazing song.
