Twenty One Pilots – Kitchen Sink lyrics

[Verse 1]
Nobody thinks what I think
Nobody dreams when they blink
Think things on the brink of blasphemy
I'm my own shrink
Think things are after me I'm my catastrophe
At my kitchen sink
You don't know what that means
Because a kitchen sink to you
Is not a kitchen sink to me
,
Okay, friend

[Verse 2]
Are you searching for purpose
Then write something, yeah it might be worthless
Then paint something then, it might be wordless
Pointless curses, nonsense verses
You'll see purpose start to surface

No one else is dealing with your demons
Meaning may be defeating them
Could be the beginning of your meaning, friend

[Chorus]
Go away (x4)
Leave me alone (x7)

[Verse 3]
Nobody thinks what you think, no one
Empathy might be on the brink of extinction
They will play a game and say they know what you're going through
And then try to come up with a narcistic way to say
They don't know you

And neither do I, so
Here's a prime example of a standup guy, who
Hates what he believes and loves it at the same time

Here's my brother and his head, screwed up, but that's alright

[Verse 4]
Time gains momentum the moment when I'm living in 'em
I'm winning a momentary sinning a moment passing after
A re-beginning moments mending memories
Pretending enemies are friend of me, sending me straight to bending me
My bad behavior but I bet I could have been a better man
Copy and paste caught me, and copy, better rhymes bother me
The better the rhythm the badder I am but I bet I'll battle with 'em battle
Better I am, Gambling man, better bet I am a gambling man, I am?

[Chorus]
Go away (x4)
Leave me alone (x5)

Don't leave me alone

To me, personally, I think this song is about how no matter how you might explain what you're going through to someone, they won't understand it entirely because they don't know how it feels on your side of it all, whether they've been through it once to (like if you're dealing with depression or an identity crisis and they had as well before) "because a kitchen sink to you is not a kitchen sink to me", "no else is dealing with your demons", "nobody thinks what you think, no one, empathy might be on the brink of extinction, they will play a game and say they know what you're going through, and then try to come up with a narcissistic way to say, they don't know you, and neither do I." So, that's what I think it means, that even though they might try to understand what you're going through they will never truly know, even if they have gone through something similar because everything has a different meaning to different people and no one can see something exactly as you see it, because it might not mean or look like the same thing. Oh, and the part "Are you searching for purpose, then write something, yeah it might be worthless, then paint something then, it might be wordless, pointless curses, nonsense verses, you'll see purpose start to surface." connects to what I'm saying more specifically as an identity crisis, if you don't know who you are don't feel afraid to try to express yourself in different ways to find out who you are, despite how others might see it.

I don't know if anyone realizes this, but Tyler never explained and will never explain what a kitchen sink is because then it loses its meaning. When you let other people know what it means to you then you lose what it really means. Hence why the lyrics say "a kitchen sink to you, is not a kitchen sink to me" therefore you can't give the true meaning to what a kitchen sink is.

It's like the beginning when he says create something only you know the meaning too. His brothers heads screwed up so he creates a "nonsense verse" which only h me truly knows the meaning to and therefore has given himself purpose in life. It might just be me,but I think the lines or sentence parts in this may individually make sense but together a meaning doesn't shout out at me. So I think Tyler Joseph has given his brother an opportunity to give himself purpose. His brother is conflicted in life his faith "hates what he believes and loves it at the same time," and that's lead him to search for purpose. If his faith is conflicted then maybe he's lost what he thought was his original purpose. So maybe this verse gives him something to hold on to till he can find his purpose within his faith again.

Just wanted to say I love how everyone always debates the meaning of Twenty One Piolet songs, but it's will never be certain what they mean. It can mean something different for each person depending on their experiences. Everyone has different demons they deal with. Everyone has their own kitchen sink. It's really a beautiful thing.
