Tom Waits – Lord I've Been Changed lyrics
Woah I, know I've been changed
And I know I've been changed
I know I've been changed
Angels in heaven done sign my name
Angels in heaven done sign my name

Well, I know I got religion,
Lord knows I'm not ashamed
Well, a holy ghost is my witness
And the angels done sign my name

Oh, I said: I know I've been changed
And I know I've been changed, yeah
Know I've been changed
Angels in heaven done sign my name
Angels in heaven done sign my name

Lord knows I've been converted
Lord knows I've been redeemed
Well, you can wake me up in the midnight hour
I'm gonna tell ya just a what I seen

I said: I know I've been changed
And I know I've been changed, yeah
Know I've been changed
Angels in heaven done sign my name
Angels in heaven done sign my name
Angels in heaven done sign my name
Angels in heaven done sign my name

Several people take credit for writing this song, most born in the 1900s, including Tom Waites and James Cleveland. It may have orginated some time in the 1800s, maybe after slavery ended reflecting the change from slavery to freedom. It's one of about 30 spirituals sung in my play, "Juneteenth."

I like this song. It sounds great and is truly soul-stirring. But I've been trying for some time to find out what the words mean. Is there a Biblical reference to Angels changing or signing one's name? One person said the song is a Negro Spiritual; and that it is saying that although the slaves were stripped of their identities, the Angels already knew who they were. That may be what the song means, but I doubt it. Was it a spiritual handed down from slavery times? I doubt that also, but with all respect. To me the words seem to speak of a spiritual conversion, but I would appreciate any insight anyone else could share. Who wrote the song, and when? Anybody know?
