My best guess is that these lyrics are sort of a non-linear rememberance of events surrounding the death of someone significant to Tom, and a sort of loose collection of things that were remembered about the person, and that all the events cumulatively amounted to "life" and life experience, which can be nullified by the fact that we will all eventually join eachother in the cold cold ground. That fact making all the seemingly insignificant events all the more valuable.
