My lover's arms
Well they beg me to stay
I know the stars
They will sweep me away
My daughter's eyes
They are two tiny seas
Whose water will rise
And they will run down her cheeks

Father where do you go?
So far out upon the sea
when are you coming home to me?
Darling, why do you leave?
The north wind begins to blow
Will you be coming home to me?

The boat and the plank
They are all that I know
The sea calls my name
And so I must go
While they still sleep
I slip out the door
How can I leave when my anchor's ashore

Father where do you go?
It's farther than I can see
when are you coming home to me?
Darling, why do you leave?
The north wind begins to blow
Will you be coming home to me?

Sounds like a "Whaler", who has the potentially dangerous and difficult job where he leaves his family for long periods at a time out on the ocean.

His wife wants to know why he's leaving at that particular time because harsh weather is coming, and wonders if he'll even make it back at all. Meanwhile his daughter doesn't understand where he's going or why he has to leave them in the first place and want's to know when he will return. Which just makes this so much more heart tugging because of the innocence of the girl expecting nothing bad and just wanting to be with her dad.

It sounds like whaling is his only means to provide and has to leave unceremoniously early in the morning when the boat leaves. He has a silent goodbye while they're asleep and slips out the door, leaving behind his whole world.

I don't think I've ever been more emotionally caught off guard by so few words in my entire life. I have so much respect for people who have to constantly deal with separation. It puts a big lump in my throat almost immediately because it paints a picture of the possibility of him losing his life, and the girl waking up in the morning with her father gone, leaning on the docks waiting for the day he comes home, like an anchor. One of my all time favorite lyrics to a song.

Side note: I also like to think, if the lyrics were actually written by thrice, that this is an analogy of the band being on the road away from their families.

The father is struggles to commit suicide, knowing who he loves and leaves behind. 1st verse talking about it right after it happens, sounds like how he's imagining it. 2nd verse talks about giving up most of his life but not being able to go through with it thinking of his wife and daughter.
