Thom Yorke – The Eraser lyrics
Please excuse me but I got to ask
Are you only being nice
Because you want something
My fairy tale arrow pierces
Be careful how you respond
'Cause you'd not end up in this song
I never gave you an encouragement
And it's doing me in
Doing me in
Doing me in
Doing me in

The more you try to erase me
The more, the more
The more that I appear
Oh the more, the more
The more you try the eraser
The more, the more
The more that you appear

You know the answer so why do you ask
I am only being nice
Because I want someone, something
You're like a kitten with a ball of yarn
And it's doing me in
Doing me in
Doing me in
Doing me in

The more you try to erase me
The more, the more
The more that I appear
Oh the more, the more
The more I try to erase you
The more, the more
The more that you appear
No, you're wrong, you're wrong
You're wrong, you're wrong
You're wrong, you're wrong
You're wrong

For me it sound like a song about narcisstic abuse and trauma bonding... Intermittent reinforcement. It's the codependent that are played with as a kitten (the narcissist)plays with a ball of yarn. The seduction game and the manipulation from a narcisst that are only playing nice to get what the want.

The first three lines appear to be the singer politely and directly questioning a character's motives. The fourth line "my fairy tale arrow pierces" (of Cupid) in combination with the line "I never gave you an encouragement" suggest the character's motives were romantic.

The chorus seems to refer to fate bringing them together despite the singer and aforementioned character's efforts to the contrary ("the more you try to erase me... the more that I appear").

The second verse sees the roles reversed ("you know the answer / so why do you ask / I am only being nice because I want something, someone"). The singer addresses the character with the same directness, sung as if the character's efforts at seduction had been successful. The subsequent lines ("You're like a kitten with a ball of yarn / And it's doing me in") sounds as if the singer was being played with but still did not want to stop "being nice" because he wanted something. Maybe the singer's romantic helplessness came as a result of the wooing without encouragement - a long, heartfelt seduction.
